Literacy ultimately brightens society as a whole, improving our understanding of our neighbors and improving the scope of reasoning and thought. Without it, the very essence of society collapses as there are less applicants for jobs and fewer people in the workforce.
Illiteracy, especially in children, can result in negative consequences that persevere well into adulthood. Simply being behind the rest of their peers in reading can lead to poor grades, low self-esteem, and behavioral issues, as well as trouble getting jobs and making friends.
